Though not the first female Supreme Court judge, Ruth Bader Ginsburg is celebrating her twentieth year on the bench. Important both for her earlier work as a pioneering female attorney and advocate for civil rights, and for playing a role in many of the countryai??i??s landmark decisions as a judge on the Supreme Court, Ginsberg continues to be one of the most important players in the nationai??i??s legal system.
Born in Brooklyn in 1933, Ginsburg, then Ruth Bader, was a very studious girl and passionate about Judaism. After attending a prestigious law program in high school, Bader attended Cornell University as an undergrad, where she met her future husband, Martin Ginsburg. After graduation, Bader and Ginsburg were married, and Ruth added her husbandai??i??s name to her own.
Ginsburg then attended Harvard Law School, where she was one of only a handful of women. Martin Ginsburg found a new job in New York City, and Ruth transferred to Columbia Law. She remained on the editorial staff of the Harvard Law Review and joined the Columbia Law Review, becoming the first woman to simultaneously edit two law reviews.
In 1960, Ginsburg was turned down for a clerkship position with Justice Felix Frankfurter because she was a woman, which would become one of the incidents in which she became determined to fight for civil rights. In 1973, she became the general counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union.
In 1980, she was appointed to the bench of Washington D.C.ai??i??s appellate court by Jimmy Carter in 1972, where she served until the next Democratic president, Bill Clinton, appointed her to the Federal Supreme Court in 1993.
As a Supreme Court Judge, Ginsburg has played a crucial role in several major federal decisions that will continue to shape American history in the centuries ahead.
Bush v. Gore- During the 2000 presidential election, the results of the national vote were so close that the outcome was completely dependent on Floridaai??i??s electoral votes. Bush was declared the winner by a slim margin, but chaos ensued as Gore asked for limited recounts and Floridaai??i??s courts struggled to contain the mess. The Supreme Courtai??i??s decision at the time enacted a stay on all further recounts, essentially confirming Bushai??i??s victory in both the state and the entire country.
Olmstead v. L.C. ai??i?? Two women, suffering from mental retardation and other mental ailments, sued Georgia for the right to continue their treatment outside of an institutional setting and in a community-based treatment center. While the specifics of the case may seem trivial, the Supreme Court presented an opinion that defined mental ailments as a form of disability, ruled that the plaintiffs were protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act, and that the state of Georgia could not prevent them from seeking treatment at a community-based facility.
Friends of the Earth, Inc. v. Laidlaw Environmental Services, Inc. In this case, the plaintiffs, a group of home owners from South Carolina, sued an industrial firm that they claim had polluted the North Tyger River which they lived near. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the home owners, deciding that because the plant still had a license to manufacture in the area, the were liable for the damage that they had previously done and the potential damage they could do to the areaai??i??s ecosystem, which diminished the value of the homeownersai??i?? properties.
The Ginsburg Precedent- While not a specific ruling of the Supreme Court, the process by which Ginsburg was approved by Congress for her position on the bench was used as a template for future judge approvals, specifically in the 2000ai??i??s under President George Bush. The types of questions asked of future Supreme Court appointees were compared to the ones Ginsburg was asked in 1993, and helped to set a standard for future appointees. buy pills how much trazodone to get high cheap minocin 100 online http://ktceducation.com/2018/02/02/shipping-gyne-lotrimin/ Purchase Buy Order viagra sildenafil online. get presctiption online for toradol im, levofloxacin cats. synthroid samples. http://ayalastem.com/2018/03/18/serophene-cost-in-canada/
