A recent study compiled by researchers at the University of California, Davis, suggests that women are still severely underrepresented in leading roles at major California companies. The study compiled lists of high-ranking employees from Californiaai??i??s 400 largest companies, and found that women were in less than 10% of all executive roles, despite the fact that fifty percent of the population is female. It stands to reason that there should be more female directors at large companies than there currently are, and the study is an attempt to discover why women are still absent from the board room.

The UC Davis Study of California Women Business Leaders is an annual report compiled by UC Davisai??i?? Graduate School of Management focusing on the role of women in leadership roles throughout the state. This yearai??i??s study, which took into account data from the 2012-2013 fiscal year, also considered the ethnicity of employees in its findings.

According to the study, out of the 400 companies surveyed, only 13 had female CEOs. Ai??The study also found that 44% of the 400 companies had no female directors, and that 34% of the companies had only one female director.

The survey singled out the software industry, one of the biggest employers in California and one of the largest sectors in the United States, as the industry with the least amount of females in top-level positions in general, alongside the semiconductor industry.

The surveyai??i??s author, Amanda Kimball, writes that in the eight years she has conducted the annual survey, there have been no significant changes in the results, with little growth in the role of women at these companies.

Despite the overwhelmingly negative results of study, Kimball released statistics that showcased companies at which the gender balance among top-level executives and directors was relatively equal. Though no companies surveyed had an all-female team of executives or directors, Williams Sonoma ranked first in gender diversity, with 46.7% of the companyai??i??s director and executive positions held by women.Ai?? bebe stores, inc, ranked second with 40%.

The studyai??i??s findings on the racial make-up of directors and executives and these companies also showed that minorities are vastly under-represented, when compared to Californiaai??i??s diverse population. 9.5% of women in director positions are non-white, while 11.6% of male directors are non-white.
