Wildly Capable Woman of the Week: Marissa Mayer Chooses God, Family, and then Yahoo!

Posted date:  December 5, 2012  |  No comment

Recently appointed Yahoo! CEO arrived at her new office under intense scrutiny. It wasnai??i??t because of her former role as a Vice President and developer at Google, or her current role as the Chief Executive Officer of the worldai??i??s second largest search engine, but her upcoming role as a mother. When Mayer officially announced that she would be leading Yahoo! on July 16, she also announced that she was six months pregnant and would be taking two weeks of maternity leave a few months into her new role.

Mayer comes from humble beginnings in Wassau, WI. She displayed an early aptitude for science and computer programming, and was selected to represent the state of Wisconsin at the National Teen Science Camp. She studied artificial intelligence at Stanford University, where she earned Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees.

After plying her Masters in computer science around the world, Mayer eventually became the 20 Cheap th vigora 5000 cost plaquenil Order Order employee of Google. While working for the search engine super-power, Mayer was instrumental in the development of Google Image, Google Maps, and Gmail. She even played a crucial role in the design and approval of Googleai??i??s now iconic home page.

Yahoo!, a company that once maintained the leading search engine before it was dethroned by Google, has been traditionally seen as the perennial number two web company to Googleai??i??s number one (though Facebook is a worthy challenger to the number two position). With the loss of their former Chief Executive Officer, it was not much of a surprise to see the company recruit within Yahoo! And while Marissa Mayer was something of a dark horse candidate for the position, she played a key role in developing Googleai??i??s services and setting the companyai??i??s pace for the last decade. Yahoo! hopes that she can realign the companyai??i??s priorities and launch some competitive new applications.

The announcement of her appointment was met with some amount of shock, as Mayer also announced her own pregnancy of six months. While she has since had her baby and returned to work, this news was initially met with skepticism, as pregnancies can have complications and it was unusual for a CEO to take a leave of absence during a time of transition. While some observers were critical of the need for leave so soon after her appointment, others said that the amount of leave she was taking was not enough for a new mother, and was setting a bad example for other employers and expecting mothers.

Mayer was recently named one of Fortune Magazineai??i??s Most Powerful Women, and in her keynote speech at the event, she described the ways she balances her new career and raising her now two-month old son.Ai?? “I think that for me, it’s God, family and Yahooai??i??in that order,” she explained.
