Wildly Capable Woman of the Week: Meg Whitman
Margaret ai???Megai??? Whitman was named by Forbes magazine as one of the five most powerful women in the world. Her work as a CEO for Disney, eBay, and Hewlett Packard has yielded enormous success for these companies, and she led a record-breaking though ultimately unsuccessful campaign for governor in California.
From humble beginnings in Long Island, NY, Meg attended Princeton University, where she studied economics before earning a Masterai??i??s degree from Harvard Business School. Upon graduating, Whitman snagged a job as a brand manager for Proctor & Gamble, before moving to Bain & Company, where she rose quickly to Senior Vice President. Throughout the early nineties, Whitman held high-level positions at companies like Stride Rite, Hasbro, and Florists Transworld Delivery. She also had a hand in importing UK television hit ai???Teletubbiesai??? to American networks.
More than anything else, Whitman is known as the CEO that transformed eBay from a small company into the international web giant it is today. She joined the company in 1998, where she immediately expanded the small staff of 30 people. In her ten years at the online auction giant, she created multiple business divisions, expanded the staff by thousands, exponentially increased revenues, and took the company public. It was during her time at the eBay that the company purchased, developed, and resold Skype, one of the worldai??i??s leading communication platforms.
Upon her resignation from eBay in 2008, Whitman discussed her time with the company with interviewer Amy Wallace. ai???You have to make decisions,ai??? said Whitman. ai???What will kill a growth company is someone who can’t make decisions. But you have to listen very hard, recognize which constituencies are speaking and then make a decision for the greater good.ai???
After leaving eBay, Whitman threw her hat into the ring for the race to be Californiaai??i??s next governor. Securing the Republican partyai??i??s nomination during the primaries, Whitman would go on to spend more than $144 million of her own money, and $178 million in donations on her campaign, which remains the record holder for the most expensive political campaign in United States history. Her campaign was unsuccessful, however, and she lost the election to current governor Jerry Brown.
After her campaign, Whitman joined the boards of several prestigious and up-and-coming companies, including Zip Car, Teach for America, Procter & Gamble, and Hewlett Packard. Less than a year after joining the board of HP, she was appointed CEO.
When asked in a 2012 interview whether she would leave her role at HP for a political role within then presidential candidate Mitt Romneyai??i??s cabinet, Whitman said, ai???When I joined H buy suprax 400 mg online methotrexate pills.
